September 2024 Update

It has been a busy month at RRHMA-Silvis, with significant progress being made both on the engines and throughout the facility. Currently, crews are focused on the installation of stay bolts on the 3985 locomotive. This process involves several detailed steps: first, the holes where the stay bolts will be installed are thoroughly cleaned. Next, the holes are carefully threaded to ensure proper fit. Once the stay bolts are threaded into place, their ends are hammered to secure them tightly within the boiler, ensuring the integrity and safety of the engine.
Crews are actively engaged in several maintenance tasks at the facility. The west door apron of the main building required significant repair work. Volunteers have successfully removed the old walkway, prepared the ground, and installed a new walkway. Additionally, many of the facility’s doors were found to be in poor condition. Crews are systematically repairing these doors to enhance the property’s efficiency during the colder months and to improve overall security.
As many of you may be aware, last month we received a generous donation from BNSF Railway: a 135-foot turntable. All components of the turntable have been delivered to RRHMA-Silvis and are currently being stored on-site in preparation for future installation.
In addition to the turntable project, crews have been focusing on the cab of the 3985 locomotive between other tasks. They are currently crafting new wood stringers to replace those that are rotted and damaged. This work is crucial for preparing the cab for new paneling and will enhance both its structural integrity and overall functionality.
Furthermore, the Hancock whistle for the 3985 has been returned to RRHMA-Silvis after undergoing a rebuild by Rizzoli Locomotive Works. Once the 3985 is fully restored and operational, the refurbished Hancock whistle will be installed and ready to signal its distinctive sound for everyone to hear.
