2024 was a transformative year for RRHMA-Silvis, filled with milestone moments that celebrated our shared passion for railroading history. From the dazzling unveiling of ATSF’s iconic Warbonnet paint to hosting our first annual Tractors and Trains event, and the extraordinary donation of a 135-foot turntable, these achievements were only possible because of the generous contributions from supporters like you.
As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to build on this momentum with ambitious new goals—and we need your help to make them happen. Your donations fuel every step of our progress, allowing us to preserve history, inspire communities, and create unforgettable experiences for rail enthusiasts of all ages.
Here’s what your support will help us achieve in 2025:
Locomotive Restorations
- Challenger #3985: Crews will focus on installing new front and rear tube sheets, removing the front engine for maintenance, and rebuilding the tender’s brake rigging and suspension. We’ll also construct a new oil tank for the tender.
- Union Pacific #5511: This historic engine requires new pistons rods and dry pipe to bring it back to life.
- US Army 80-Tonner: Plans include a vibrant new paint job to restore this engine’s former glory.
Passenger Cars and Cabooses
- Diner Car #5016: We aim to fully restore this car with polished stainless steel, new windows and furnishings, refrigeration upgrades, and a complete electrical overhaul.
- Caboose Restoration: Continued sanding, exterior sandblasting, fresh paint, new windows, and electrical systems are all in the works.
Yard and Infrastructure Upgrades
- BNSF Cicero Turntable Installation: This monumental project will involve careful planning, excavation, foundation work, and significant labor to ensure this 135-foot turntable is ready for future operations.
